Mindy Dull of the Fight On Foundation with our youth

Trinity Youth Group
Today we had a special speaker at church. Our youth group had a soup and candy fundraiser last year and raised over $400 for Chemo Ducks, which are stuffed animal play therapy tools for children with cancer. Mindy Dull of the Fight on Foundation, wants to provide enough Chemo Ducks to cover the entire east coast. They've come a long way! Our donation went to provide ducks for the state of Connecticut!
Mindy Dull gave a "temple talk" before worship. Mindy created the Fight On Foundation after her husband died. She wanted to create the foundation to be able to help others who are struggling with cancer. With the help of family and friends, she said she was so fortunate to be able to be Derrick's primary care giver when he was sick and they were able to spend a lot of quality time together. She wants to aid other families so they also can focus on their loved one. Her husband, Derrick, died in December, just three weeks after their wedding. He battled cancer for almost a year and he said he realized a lot when he was diagnosed. He wanted to talk with young people and share with them what is important in life, that material things don't matter, to not sweat the small stuff and treasure every moment. The most important things in life are not things, that it is relationships that matter and caring for those around you and reaching out to others. Sadly, Derrick never got to share this message personally with us. His wife, Mindy, though, came and shared his message with our youth group today. It was something that touched them profoundly and deeply and I think they all took it to heart. Mindy shared a powerpoint slide show of Derrick's life with us. He would have been 24 years old on June 6th. We thank Mindy so much for sharing such a personal part of her life with us...she is amazing! Check out her blogs posted to the right of our blog. There are two of them. Derrick posted on his blog almost daily as he went through his journey with cancer. He was able to remain positive up until the end. I wish we could have known him; he seemed like an amazing individual so full of live and love for others.
